The wooden church built in the middle of the 15th century is
the oldest historic architectural monument in Tvrdošín. Originally, dedicated to
the Mourning of Christ, was later dedicated to All Saints.
Tvrdošín is the oldest town in the Orava region and one of the twenty oldest
Slovak towns.
In the 19th century, mass archeological discoveries confirmed the ancient
settlement of town of Tvrdošín situated at the confluence of two rivers and a
strategic trade road linking the Baltic sea with the Mediterranean area. There
was a custom station called tricezima, most probably mentioned under names
Toarsin and Doardi in the Zobor document in 1111.
In the document of King Belo IV. from August 11, 1265, Tvrdošín was undoubtedly
listed as Toardosina. In 1369, King Ľudovít I. Granted Tvrdošín the municipal
rights and in 1965, the statupe of a town was renewed. In October 1996, Tvrdošín
became the centre of a new district after 74 years again.
On memorable April 23, 1995, the mayor of Tvrdošín
received a diploma issued by the Paneuropean organization Europa Nostra “for
preservation and excellent restoration of this significant monument of
wooden architecture with its traditional internal handicraft”.
On the same day, a 22 cm wide round bronze commemorative plaque Europa
Nostra Auszeichnung was placed at the southern church entrance. It should
remind the future generations of their duty to continue to preserve this
great Slovak and European cultural monument.
